The Incanda Story
Gerhard van Deventer, the owner, grew up on a farm near Swellendam, in the Southern Cape. Having always had an entrepreneurial spirit, he started his own business after completing his studies and initially established himself in the leather and skins wholesaling industry.
After getting numerous requests from his leather customers for upholstered products he decided to yield to his creative instincts and start his own exclusive leather upholstery. He recruited a varsity friend, Hendri Visser as production manager and they started production in a double garage in December 2003. The business was an instant success and has grown from, producing about 10 couches per month in the first year to current volumes of more than 100 new couches per month.
A re-upholstery department where well-lived classics are restored were established a year or so down the line. This unit does the equivalent of around 30 new couches per month.
Over the past few years they also added a wooden furniture division, as well as an interior dcor service. The business now employs close to 90 people.
Where the first decade of Incanda was very much focussed on establishing the business and attaining a certain critical mass in terms of production capacity, Gerhard has now turned his focus to the following three areas:
Developing a truly South-African inspired and designed range of products unique to Incanda
Turning the factory into a world class operation in terms of production efficiency and quality standards
Taking client service to another level and thus becoming the most loved furniture brand in the country.
